U.S. Holiday Season Sales: Up 16% to $61 Billion

An extra shopping day that falls between Thanksgiving and Christmas will also help consumer spending.

American online Christmas sales will surge 16 percent on last year, totaling more than $61 billion, digital analytics firm ComScore Inc is predicting.

The company believes the increase in consumer spending reflects their rising economic optimism.

In a breakdown of e-commerce spending in for November and December, ComScore predicts that purchases made from desktop personal computers will come to $53.2 billion, up 14 percent on last year.

And mobile shopping is seen surging 25 percent to $7.87 billion. ComScore believes it will account for 13 percent of all holiday e-commerce.

U.S. stock markets are near record highs and inflation is low, so spending is being fueled by a rising consumer sentiment. Dropping gasoline prices have also put more money in consumers’ pockets.

“We are seeing healthy growth,” said ComScore analyst Adam Lella.

“We expect mobile to grow at a faster rate going forward, but it won’t be split even, since it’s just an easier experience to shop on the desktop.”
