A Swiss company bought Alrosa's biggest diamond

The Swiss-American luxury company "Mouawa" has purchased a 51.38 carat diamond, the largest and pureest of the five stones offered for sale by the Russian mining company Alrosa. According to Mawad, this is a traditional, round, brilliant diamond in the colors D and VVS1, making it the largest diamond ever made in Russia.

Alrosa originally unveiled the 179-carat rough diamonds in 2015 in Nyurvinskaya's kimberlite pipe in Russia.

“What attracted us to the Dynasty is not only its exceptional quality, but the transparency of its history and the fact that it’s the largest and most valuable diamond ever sold by Alrosa. It’s a rare gem with a remarkable record,” said Fred and Pascal Mouawad, co-CEOs of the Mouawad Group.

The company, based in Dubai and Geneva, has recently acquired a reputation for breaking the Guinness world record with elaborate designs, such as the 1001 Nights Diamond Purse, a heart-shaped bag valued at a whopping $3.8 million thanks to 4,517 diamonds. The company's first store in the Gulf opened in the Dubai Mall in 2010. Today it has 20 stores throughout the Middle East, Asia, Switzerland and the United States.

The company's owner, Robert Mawad, expanded the company his grandfather founded in Beirut in 1890 by collecting jewelery worn by world celebrities, from Angelina Jolie to Gisele Bundchen. Over the years, the company acquired a collection of exceptional diamonds, including the 245.35 carat Jubilee Diamond, the 135.92 carat Queen of Holland diamond, the 69.42 carat Taylor Burton and the largest cushion shaped D IF weighting 218.08 carat.
