Shear Diamonds maintains silence despite official request for information, says report

The Nunavut Impact Review Board still has not had any contact from Shear Diamonds, the owner of the Jericho diamond mine in Northern Canada, since it abandoned the operation last year.
The miner closed the Jericho diamond operation last September as falling diamond prices made it less economically feasible.

Shear acquired the Jericho mine nearly three years ago following the bankruptcy of the previous owners.

A federal inspection of the site last September revealed that dangerous waste had not been properly stored and signs that fuel spills had not been dealt with, CBC News reports.

The NIRB asked Shear to produce several reports by February 5.

It is now seeking to discover if Shear was in compliance with necessary licenses and permits.

Its water license obliged Shear to deposit a security bond for the amount of $3.4 million with the federal government. A site inspection report dated September 13, 2012 showed that the firm had an outstanding security of $1 million.

The Jericho mine is Nunavut’s first diamond mine and Canada’s third such operaqtion after the Ekati and Diavik mines in the North West Territories.
